secretary D Subbarao said that monetary measures by RBI would be the first line of defence to contain the rise in inflationary pressure - RBI governor met finance minister P Chidambaram on Friday. Subbaro said that RBI is expected to take some measures soon. However, he refused to divulge the details saying that "it is up to the governor and the RBI to take monetary policy action". Economists feel that the RBI measures would be to increase interest rates to contain demand and curb the price rise.
